following the light

in the distance i see a light
brighter with every passing moment

i used to see nothing
only darkness
a long abyss

no concept of time or distance

every step forward
im closer to the flame
warmth penetrates my body

outlines in the distance
shadows from afar
i cant quite make them out

a path beneath my feet
a direction
i can see where im going

i forgot what this was like
or maybe i never really knew

i ran for a while in the darkness
just to get out
find some safety

i didnt know there was a fire burning
i couldnt see it
i only felt the earth beneath my feet
and dodged the trees as i passed them by
the cold made me shiver
so i kept moving

running out of steam from exhaustion
i collapsed
i needed to rest

even though i still didnt know where i was
even though i couldnt see anything at all

there was nothing left
i fell asleep

and when i woke up
something changed

however small, the light felt blinding
and i had never experienced warmth before

i sometimes wonder if the light is real at all
or merely an illusion
but something tells me to keep going
to trust in the light as i trusted in the dark
